‘Our work explores the future possibilities of implanting interactive components underneath the skin, which would enable people to directly interact with their implants,’ said Christian Holz, who worked alongside Tovi Grossman and George Fitzmaurice at Autodesk.

‘We discovered that traditional interactive components can work through skin and the metrics collected from this study can inform the future design of interactive implants.’

Gadgets work under your skin – but are you ready?
A button, an LED and a touch sensor all functioned appropriately when embedded under the skin of a cadaver's arm. The team was even able to communicate transcutaneously using a Bluetooth connection and charge the electronics wirelessly.

"That's the bottom line," says Christian Holz of the Autodesk team, who presented the work this week at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in Austin, Texas. "Traditional user interfaces work through the skin."

How Cell-phone Implants Work

In November 2002, designers at the Royal College of Art in London made headlines after coming up with the world's first cell-phoneimplant. Their design involved a small chip that housed a receiver and a transducer. The receiver could pick up mobile phone signals, and the transducer could translate them into vibrations.

Once implanted in a person's molar, the transducer caused the tooth to vibrate in response to radiosignals. The physical structure of the jaw carried the tooth's vibrations to the inner ear, where the user, and no one else, could perceive them as sound. The implant's designers held dramatic demonstrations of this principle using a vibrating wand. Participants confirmed that they could hear crystal clear voices through their teeth.

Programmed DNA Robot Goes Where Scientists Tell it
A tiny robot made from strands of DNA could pave the way for mini-machines that can dive into the human body to perform surgeries, among other futuristic applications.

While DNA-based robots have been made before, this latest real-life micromachine is the first one that researchers have successfully programmed to follow instructions on where to move. Once assembled, the robot can take multiple steps without any outside help, according to lead researcher Andrew Turberfield, a professor at the University of Oxford.

Could an Italian Scientist Pave the Way for Human Head Transplants?

Italian scientist Sergio Canavero believes he has come up with an outline to successfully complete the first human head transplant in history, which could lead to solutions for those suffering from muscular dystrophy or tetraplegics with widespread organ failure.

Head transplants have been attempted since the 1950s, when Russian scientist Vladimir Demikhovexperimented with dogs. Twenty years later, American neurosurgeon Robert White conducted a successful head transplant by moving the head of one monkey to the body of another. The monkey lived for several days, but because White could not connect the two spinal cords, the monkey eventually died.

Canavero describes in a recent paper a step to connect donor and recipient spinal cords – the one component that was missing from previous procedures because the technology to do so was not yet available.

Biologically-Inspired Robotics is part of a body of work at the intersection of biology and robotics. In order to avoid confusion, this article will use the term biorobotics to refer to this broad intersection, reserving the termbiologically-inspired robotics for work whose primary focus is the application of biological ideas to address technological problems (sometimes also called biomimetics), and the term biorobotic modeling for work whose primary focus is the use of robots as a modeling tool for addressing biological questions.

Better Than Human: Why Robots Will — And Must — Take Our Jobs

It’s hard to believe you’d have an economy at all if you gave pink slips to more than half the labor force. But that—in slow motion—is what the industrial revolution did to the workforce of the early 19th century. Two hundred years ago, 70 percent of American workers lived on the farm. Today automation has eliminated all but 1 percent of their jobs, replacing them (and their work animals) with machines. But the displaced workers did not sit idle. Instead, automation created hundreds of millions of jobs in entirely new fields. Those who once farmed were now manning the legions of factories that churned out farm equipment, cars, and other industrial products. Since then, wave upon wave of new occupations have arrived—appliance repairman, offset printer, food chemist, photographer, web designer—each building on previous automation. Today, the vast majority of us are doing jobs that no farmer from the 1800s could have imagined.
