It's robo-drone! Tiny policing helicopter used to hunt pirates fires stun gun baton rounds

It's the latest weapon in the war on crime - a tiny tasering remote-controlled helicopter that can also fire shotgun shells and grenades.

The Shadowhawk UAV may only be seven-foot long and weigh a measly 49lbs, but it is already being used to track pirates off the Horn of Africa and enforce law on the streets of the U.S.

The discreetness of the chopper, and its top speeds of 70mph, means it can follow suspects and conduct aerial patrols where traditional police helicopters would never dare to go.

The technology is useful, but poses significant privacy risks.”Drones have very powerful cameras attached to them,” Crump says, “they can see a lot more than the naked eye.” In fact, they can even see through walls with FLIR thermal imaging technology.
Crump believes one of the most alarming prospects is that police drones won’t just have cameras on them, but will also be armed with non-lethal weapons. Such technology is not as far off as you might think. Missile defense systems like Israel’s Iron Dome and the United States’ Phalanx automatically detect, track, and shoot down incoming missiles. The U.S. Navy’s X-47B drone, launched successfully from an aircraft carrier last month, can execute its flight plan autonomously, with a human overriding it only if something goes wrong. In South Korea, the SGR-1 sentry robot targets people who enter the demilitarized zone and shoots them if a soldier back at base gives the command. Heyns is worried that soon the soldier could be taken out of the loop.

Special delivery: Drone drops contraband into Georgia prison yard

A Georgia prison yard recently had a special delivery for inmates, when a small helicopter flew over the facility and dropped tobacco products inside the gates, a local news station reported.

After a lieutenant at the Calhoun State Prison noticed the unauthorized aerial vehicle, authorities immediately began canvassing the area. After a suspicious black car was found nearby, a search was conducted and two pounds of tobacco was found inside.
